Rakaia River

Sir,—Like Mr Watson (May 22), we are deeply concerned about the Rakaia River and are well aware of the implications of the whole of the Rakaia being declared a wild and scenic river. We believe we have a responsibility to future generations to see that the Rakaia is left in its unique natural state, for, indeed it is the last major river in Canterbury which can still be classified as “wild and scenic.” Protection for major rivers in New Zealand to date has been dismal to say the least and policy such as is being formulated at present is heartening.—Yours, etc.,

R. and J. SNOYINK Darfield. May 22, 1981.
