Protection and the consumer
Sir,—Who protects New Zealand consumers from the economic decisions of government? In recent days we have found that imported wine is to go up in price because of increased tariffs to protect local wine growers. It has been announced that people will no longer be able to buy. cheap, locally made, synthetic carpets, to stop competition with the woollen industry. And it seems that do-it-yourself home construction and'renovation is to be halted by legislation originating in the building industry; The large gains to be made by industries benefiting from legal protection by the Government, cause them to lobby politicians. Each of the millions who suffer a small loss as a result do not find it worth while to object publicly. The losses suffered by consumers are under-valued by politicians.—Yours, etc., R. MANNING, Professor of Economics. May 25, 1981.
