School zoning
Sir,—The secondary school zoning map shows a ridiculously unfair situation. Few parents are allowed to have a choice between single-sex and co-educational schools. If Cashmere and Hillmorton were converted to single-sex schools (one boys’, one girls’) and the same was done in the north with Papanui and Mairehau (or Hillmorton and Riccarton matched by Aranui and Linwood), Christchurch could be zoned into three catchment areas of six, four, four schools. Each catchment area would include one boys’ school, one girls’ and two co-educational schools (or in one catchment area, four co-ed schools). Parents would have a wider choice of schools, without any pupil having to travel far.— Yours, etc.,
V. F. WILKINSON. May 23, 1981.
