Police probe safe thefts
PA Auckland Detectives are investigating a safe raid which might be the work of a wellorganised gang with 40 successful breaks under its belt.
The gang has worked in the upper North Island since July last year. The latest target, the Mount Smart service station, in Onehunga, lost more than $lO,OOO in cash, cheques, and petrol vouchers. Auckland detectives coordinating the inquiries would say only that the break — “an extremely neat job” — appeared to be linked with the previous ones, as the safe was cracked in the same manner.
The safe had been drilled — common to all the burglaries — by the gang of up to 10 members and associates, detectives said.
The police say that the gang’s approach is extremely “professional,” and its main targets have been service stations, supermarkets, and cinemas.
The latest haul is one of the biggest by the gang during an 11-month reign which has netted more than $250,000.
