Safe Air seeks 20 p.c.increase
PA Wellington The freight airline. Safe Air. has applied for an average 20 per cent increase in its rail-air rates across Cook Strait. Although the application to the Air Services Licensing Authority is made in the name of Safe Air. it is in fact on behalf of the Railways Department, which meets the cost of the Cook Strait service. Rail passenger fares and freight rates have recently risen by 20 per cent, and the Safe Air application aims to bring rail-air charges in line. The licensing authority expects to hear the application on Tuesday, and has the power to grant the increase immediatelj'. Examples of the new’ rates
are: Wellington to Blenheim ordinary goods traffic, up from 13.07 c a kilo to 15.68 c a kilo; priority traffic, up from 15.69 c a kilo to 18.83 c a kilo. Blenheim to Wellington ordinary goods. 13.73 c (previously 11.44 c); priority goods, 16.49 c (13.74 c Wellington-Nelson (one rate only), up from 17.41 c to 20.89 c. Nelson-Wellington (one rate only), up from 15.25 c to 18.30 c. Rail-air rates for freight leaving the South Island are less because of a policy of encouraging South Island industries. Air New Zealand’s freight rate between Wellington and Blenheim and Wellington and Nelson is 30c a kilo, both ways.
