Irish player quits job
NZPA-Reuter Dublin A second Irish rugby player said yesterday he had quit his job to take part in his country’s tour of South Africa next month.
Jerry Holland, a lock, said his employers, Unilever Computer Services, had refused to give him time off for the tour, which begins on May 9.
Last month the Irish scrum-half, John Robbie, gave up his executive posi-
tion with Guinness Brewery for similar reasons. Another Guinness employee, Michael Gibson, withdrew from the 26-strong party. The Irish Rugby Football Union has rejected calls by ministers, churchmen and trade union leaders to call off the tour because of South Africa’s apartheid policies.
The Irish Prime Minister, Mr Charles Haughey, is due to meet Irish rugby officials later this week to outline his Government’s opposition.
