Arterial route to be opened
Stage two of the Christchurch southern arterial route linking Curletts Road with the Brougham. Street expressway will be opened to traffic at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4. Work first started on the arterial route in 1971 but was deferred for nearly two years in 1976 because of a lack of National Roads’ Board funds. Stage one, linking Blenheim Road with Halswell Road, was opened on October 26 1979. The total cost of. the arterial route is $8 million with stage one costing $3.3 millions nd the Second Stage $4.7 million. Overbridges on the second section are the reason for the higher cost. Originally, the 2.7 km stage two section was planned to be a four-lane highway, but a reappraisal of finances in 1976 restricted it to a two*, lane road, with provisions for an extension to. a four-lane highway if justified in the future.
The speed limit on the new section will be 80 km/h and cyclists are prohibited from using the new route.
