North Westland forests

Sir,—The Wildlife Service and the Ecology Division (D.5.1.R.) both made recommendations for ecological reserves taking into account the needs of native birds. The Scientific Co-ordinating Committee, ignoring the D.S.I.R. proposals and largely rejecting those of the Wildlife Service, produced recommendations based essentially on vegetational criteria only. The Officials Committee, vetting these, selectively removed the podo-carp-dominant forest to such an extent that 80% of the deleted area was below 300 m — just the most valuable bird

habitat. All this was done in secret. No wonder the reserves in the management plan. fall well short of the goal of preserving a cross section of typical landforms, unmodified forest types and wildlife communities. We should remember: “We have not inherited the earth front our parents; we have borrowed it from our children.” The forests of North Westland are extensive enough to accommodate' both sus-tained-yield production and adequate reserves.—Yours. etc ” ERIC BENNETT.
