Sterilisation delay

Sir,—l cannot quite keep pace with the apparent contradiction of medical opinion. On the one hand we have the Medical Superintendent of Christchurch Women’s Hospital delaying sterilisation operations for up to two years until the women in question fully consider their attitude towards further pregnancies. On the other hand, the existence of obstetrical opinion that beyond age 34 a pregnancy constitutes a potential obstetrical problem with which few practitioners wish to deal. Considering that the majority of requests for sterilisation come from women over the age of 30, why the reluctance? Why the delay?— Yours, etc., FELICITY PAERATA. March 27, 1981.
