Council backs Mayor
PA Wellington The Lower Hutt City Council has passed a vote of confidence in the men in the .middle of the Mainzeal row. ' The motion, put by Cr H. B. Turbott and seconded by Cr Lucy Cole, expressed the council's confidence in the .integrity and sincerity of purpose of the Mayor (Mr J. Kennedy-Good), L. Woodley, and the Town Clerk (Mr R. H. Deal). Last year the three went to Australia at the expense of the Mainzeal Corporation after the council decided to offer land for a shopping centre to the Government Life Office. Mainzeal is associated with the centre, planned for the central city land. Earlier this month Cr Chen Werry instigated a complaint to the police about the trip. After investigating, the police said they would not take the complaint any further. Eleven councillors voted in favour of Cr Turbott’s motion. Among the five absentions were Cr Werry and Cr Woodley. Cr Werry said he had abstained because of legal advice.
