Pickets, police and HART
Sir, — Recently news came that a special police contingent was being trained to protect the Springboks on tour. To some extent the Veteran Games was a trial run for police. HART “picketers” were attacked, HART protest-
ers were arrested and subsequently fined, foreign sportsmen' who attacked HART pro- ! testers were not charged. Now it appears police powers are being further tested. The arrests of picketers were made at Ravensdown and Auckland under two different laws, each significant for arresting HART or other Springbok protesters. The parallel was suggested by the Police Association spokesman in a radio interview? on Wednesday. Considering that added to the S2M plus to protect a tour, immoral by international standards, \we have industrial dislocation of ’the present magnitude, and denial of basic trade union rights' — picketing — will the Government still defy . Gleneagles? Will it permit Springboks to thus harm our people and squander our, money?,— Yours, etc., . B.,ROBERTS. February 28,1981.
