Sugar beet industry
Sir, — I was delighted to read of the Ashburton Business Development Committee’s plans for a. sugar beet industry in the region, This kind of labour intensive enterprise is exactly what the country.’ needs. It 7 creates a large number of jobs in relation to the cost of the pro- . ject. These would cost only $240,000 compared to a massive $700,000 for each smelter job. The project would -be well-integrated into the economy, using local skills and renewable resources. The central government should encourage. such initiative instead of running around after foreign corporations who .will squander our natural heritage. — Yours, etc., K. E. CRONIN. February 27, 1981.
