Meat marketing
Sir, — Overseas private companies played a major role until 1922 in marketing New. Zealand meat products but then some 180,000 tons of meat was left Unsold. ,So then the Meat Marketing Board was set up by the National Government of the day; objective, reduction of production shipping and marketing costs. The farmers agreed to combine together so that marketing could be done effectively and still so agree. How. would a reversion to the private marketing used before the First World War improve the present efforts to extend our meat markets abroad? If there was compulsory acquisition now, and a sell out to private firms, would not another “horizontal” monopoly develop? Perhaps P. Tate could say what form of private enterprise he envisages handling such a complex operation. I think ■. that ;“own-account selling is still permissible Y °“ rS ' 'S'TRICK NEARY. February 27, 1981.
