Soviet-West German gas deal
Sir, — The article on “The Press Features” page of February 24, “Russia and Germany in vast gas deal,” shows how little substance there is in claims that West Europeans fear Soviet invasion ’ or aggressive intentions. In September of last year it was reported that French banks were also •providing vast credits to bring Soviet natural gas to France. On the. international page of 5 the same - issue, there is a report of veiled threats, under the. headline “W. Europe . reluctant to spend more on arms,” by the United States Deputy Defence Secretary, . Mr Frank Carlucci, that “Washington would neither improve its forces in Europe nor play a lone role in defending West-
ern interests elsewhere if allied. defence spending was not increased sharply,” presenting Western Europe with a glorious opportunity to divest itself of the crippling arms burden with which United States’ aggressive icies have shackled it, with its attendant dangers of war with the Soviet bloc. — Yours, etc., M. CREEL. February 27, 1981.
