Coastal resources

Sir, — The 1970 Physical Environment Conference made a strong case for coastal management and land use planning. Nothing was' done. Iri' May, 1980,' the Environmental Council reported its “Review of Coastal. Planning Policy” to . the Minister for the Environment. No reaction has yet surfaced. Where is the political will to do anything about our coastal resource before it is frittered away in piecemeal development? The demand is urgent for an autonomous commission to champion the needs of the coastal zone, and for,-; a national aquaculture development plan. Our coastal waters could support a valuable industry—the very sort of low-impact development we should be looking to rather than these high-cost, high-technology, dependent. J mammoth projects. Interviewed on-his appointment as ’ minister for the environment, Dr Shearer identified three key areas with which he intended to be concerned: industrial developments, native forests, fresh ;’.water .. rivers. He should have added coastal waters. — Yours, etc., ■' ' ;ERIC BENNETT. February 24, 1981.
