Cattle ban irks councillors
| Some Bunks Peninsula farmers will not be able to drive their cattle along the road, if a proposed Canterbury United Council scheme goes ahead. Councillors have criticised the scheme at a meeting of the Akaroa County Council. It defines State Highway 75, Long Bay Road, and the Summit Road, as minor arterial roads. . All arterial ,roads have limited access and driving cattle along them is prohibited unless a special allowance is made. The scheme defines roads into four categories; major and minor arterials, secondary, and local roads. All other roads in the Akaroa county are classed as local. But this section of the scheme, which is part of an o-er-all plan for Canterbury, is open to public objection until April 30. The council decided to write to the United Council and the Ministry of Works expressing concern about the proposal. Museum charge.—An entry fee may have to be charged at the Akaroa museum. “Donations have fallen sharply. We .must in-
vestigate some way of keeping the museum going,” said Cr R. K. Craw. The museum had received $lOOO in donations last financial year, said the County Clerk, Mr G. E. H’tnn. It >.ad been estimated that $l5OO in gifts would be re-j ceived this year, but only’ $5OO had been given. . “If we had the donations which we have to make to Canterbury Museum, we would not be in trouble,” said Cr G. P. A. de Latour. Mussel farm. — Mussel farming in Akaroa Harbour is not on, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. An application made by Mr C. J. Marsh to farm mussels was declined by the Ministry. New reserve.—Onawe Island. in Akaroa Harbour, will be made a reserve. . The Lands and Survey De-' partment bought the island after receiving approval] from the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr E. J.I Davies). The department asked the] council for approval to set! the island aside as a reserve. The council agreed.
