Public allowed on Oval

The public will be allowed on Lancaster Park Oval during the intervals in the second cricket test between India and New Zealand from March 6 to 11. However, this decision was made only after the late arrival of the chairman of the Canterbury Cricket Association’s management committee (Mr A. G. Duckmanton) at the meeting on Wednesday evening. Mr Duckmanton, who had been in Wellington attending a New Zealand Cricket Council meeting,

arrived just when the committee had agreed to ban the public from the playing arena during the test.

Before the motion to this effeet was put, Mr Duckmanton explained that this was contrary to the wishes of the New Zealand Cricket Council which wanted to encourage children -op to the ground. Mr Duckmanton’s late message changed the minds of members, who had given the matter a long airing, and the motion was never put.
