Standard on I.U.D.s

Wellington reporter A New Zealand Standard covering intra-uterine devices (LU.D.s) had been published by the Standards Association. It specifies their physical properties and conditions of sterility, packaging, labelling, and storage. The standard gives only a general description of I.U.D.s, because of the wide variety of shapes, sizes, and other properties. Also, it does not cover performance criteria, as this needs to be assessed by clinical experience and is outside the scope of the Standard.

The Standard was developed at the request of the Health Department. Under the Contraception, Sterilisation. and Abortion Act, 1977, all contraceptives made or sold in New Zealand must comply with an approved Standard.

The six-page Standard, NZS 7102, is available to the public at the cost of $7.55.
