Levin hotel gutted
PA Levin Levin’s oldest hotel, built in 1911, was gutted by fire early last evening. The two-storey Grand Tavern in Oxford Street became an inferno within half an hour of the fire’s outbreak at 5.20 p.m. Patrons left the bars in an orderly manner carrying jugs, bottles, and bil-
liard cues with them. Nobody was injured. Fire brigades from Waitarere, Shannon, Otaki, and Foxton were called in and the Palmerston North brigade'was alerted. State highway I through Levin was closed and traffic diverted round the borough. The fire, the biggest in Levin for ; many years, attracted a big crowd.
