Official report, prices

Fine wools were cheaper at the Christchurch wool sale yesterday, but crossbred.wools wore unchanged, according to the official report on the sale issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Woolbuyers’ Association. For fine wools the market compared with the Timaru sale on February 5 was quoted as follows:— Merino: nominally up to 5 per cent cheaper; extra fine, fine and medium Halfbreds, 2J per cent to 5 per cent cheaper; strong and extra strong Halfbreds, in buyers' favour; Halfbred skirtings: nominally in buyers’ favour. Compared with the Wanganui sale this week the market for crossbred wools is as follows:— Fine, medium and strong crossbreds: firm. Short hogget, sec-ond-shear, lambs’ wool and skirtings: nominally unchanged. The report says that t.he main competition came from Eastern Europe and China with limited support from the Continent, Japan and local mills. The Wool Board gave substantial support to the market by bidding on 7676 bales, or 76.7 per cent of the offering, and having 3139 bales, or 31.3 per cent, sold or passed to it. sThe sale by sample consisted of 10,012 bales contributed mainly by North Canterbury, the Canterbury plains, and Marlborough with a few lots from Nelson and the West Coast. Fleece wools were generally of good colour, but many of the lots were low yielding but of good style. All wool was tested for yield and manv lots were also tested for fibre diameter. The range of prices issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association. is:—
