Satisfactory Coalgate fair
Two-tooth and adult ewes in good order had a satisfactory sale at the first Coalgate ewe fair yesterday. The only real enthusiasm for ewes came from buyers looking for sheep with good mouths and carrying plenty of condition.
The best Romney twotooths sold at rates which were $1 to $1.50 ahead of last week’s special two-tooth sale at Addington • but the balance barely managed to keep pace with the tone set at Addington. Some excellent five-year Romney .and Coopworth ewes were offered with particularly strong competition from the, relatively small gallery." • ' ' ■ - Some of the ewes from' flatland farms • • showed obvious signs of the dry spell of the last few weeks. They were of low condition and attracted little interest.
Roy.- Robindale, Ltd (Te Pirita) provided some top stock for the sale, The best of' this farm’s Romneys and Coopworths both shared the highest price for the day — $25.20. Last year , the best money paid was $35.40 for a
pen of Coopworths from J. E. Redfern (Darfield). Most of the Romneys offered were between $l7 and $19.40 and Coopworths from $16.20 to $lB.- It took a good Coopworth to exceed $2O. The top price for old ewes was $18.20 paid for a lightlywoolled four-year Romney cross sheep from Terrace Farm (Russells Flat). Other Romneys and Coopworths were mainly between $l5 and $17.20.
The best old ewe price last year was $29.20 for a line of Coopworths from F. D. Richards (Glenroy). The’ few Perendales yarded were excellent representatives of the breed. Twotooths sold between $16.40 and §21.20. ' Some excellent first-cross Romney ewe lambs were offered on behalf of T. A. McKenzie (Hororata). The 295 lambs, made between $lB.BO and $l9.
