Protest to Korea
Wellington
New Zealand’s Ambassador in Seoul, Mr E. Famon, has reiterated New Zealand’s opposition to the South Korean Government over the death sentence imposed on a leading dissident and former presidential candidate, Kim Dae-Jung. In Parliament yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys) answering a question, said: “The Ambassador ' advised the Prime Minister of the
Rebublic of Korea on November 8 of the strong public reaction which could be expected in this country if the death sentence was carried out. “The Ambassador reiterated the Government’s hope that the outcome of this case would make it easier rather than more difficult for New Zealand to maintain the traditional warmth of our long-standing ties with the republic,” Mr Taiboys said.
