Victimisation among the young

Sir, — We are in full agreement with G. A. Leicester (November 19) concerning victimisation of children by children, except for one important point. G. A. Leicester believes that “the ugly lesson, that threats and violence give one power, is taught to us by television.” But the kind of cruelty (or, as it is generally, euphemistically , called — teasing) G. A. Leicester refers to, has existed long before television. The lesson that violence brings power is taught by parents — and teachers, as several recent correspondents have pointed out — who believe in heavy-handed “discipline,” of the “do as I say because I’ll wallop you if you'don’t” variety. Teaching children respect for weaker people, rather than fear of stronger ones, would go a long way towards combating the problem of cruelty among young people. — Yours, etc., R. W. GLUE and C. GLUE.
