Sir, — I would be interested to know by what method V. H. Anderson learnt to talk. Did her parents teach her to talk by “a structured system”? Does she' consider making sense of the spoken word a less complex and essentially different activity from that of making sense of the written word? What is the point of reading at all. if it is not “reading for meaning”? — Yours, etc., (Mrs) M. J. ERBFR. . November 25, 19.80. Torn Scott’s position Sir, — Surely Tom Scott has received all the publicity he is seeking. I was sur-
prised that the writers' association has taken sb long to send its criticism, even though it is hardly convincing. Of course one would expect independent thinking from such an organisation. Real political reporting probably would have been accepted at the Prime Minister’s conference. Since Tom Scott has already lost in a law case with the Prime Minister and the money given to charity. I hardly think it likely that the Prime Minister would have agreed to Tom Scott’s presence at his conference. In “The Press” of November 24, I see mention of Katherine Mansfield’s name. I must say Katherine' and other New Zealand writers have given a lot to New Zealand and are much appreciated overseas — Yours, etc. G. GRIFFIN. Greymouth. November 24, 1980.
