New coal conveyors nearly ready
The construction of new conveyors to eliminate the use of trucks between the coal stockpile and the bulk-loading plant at Cashin Quay is on schedule and should be completed by Christmas, according to the engineering department of the Lvttelton Harbour Board. 'if so, the facility should be ready for the next shipment of Buller coal to Japan, now tentatively scheduled for the end of the year. , , , Meanwhile, In anticipation of continuing coal exports from New Zealand to Japan, the board Is planning to make additional submissions soon on the study of coal transport options to the West Coast United Council. The board's chairman (Mr J. E. Mannering) said that he was confident Lyttelton could handle more than 250,000 tonnes of export coal per year with its improved facilities and at a cost less than that which would be involved in conjunction with various loading scheme which had been mooted for the Best Coast and elsewhere. Industrial problems, however, mar again arise to delay the next coal shipment. No agreement has been reached yet between the Ministry of Energy and the New Zealand Seamen's Union regarding the manning of coal export vessels by New Zealand seamen. The first coal export shipment in Julv was marked, by a seamen’s demonstration at the vessel Sunda Career. The second shipment, aboard the Bengal Career, was more se J ri °" s j£ delaved when the, seamen declared the vessel black A un’nn spokesman mrtter was not settled before tn* arrival of the next 'jssm* thn’-Tht to be the Sunda Career again, loading would not be allowed to begin.
