Parks policy
Sir, — The Minister of Lands has resolutely failed to take serious notice of the many critics, of the caucus committee report on national parks and, reserves administration arid, latterly,, of his proposed' National Parks Bill. By his persistence with an ill-advised plan he has antagonised many of the people most interested in, and knowledgeable about the parks. The criticism can be made on many grounds, but one of the most important is the opportunity which will be given under the new bill, for easier commercial exploitation of the parks. The only, way to ensure that the parks are safeguarded, by direct public participation in their management, seems to be to rouse a campaign of the intensity of that needed
to save Lake Manapouri. The Federated Mountain Clubs are an obvious choice to organise this. — Yours, etC- ’ COLIN BURROWS. October 15, 1980.
