Few offer as rubbish rangers
Public response to the Waimairi County Council’s voluntary waterway ranger scheme has been minimal, according to the County Clerk (Mr J. Reid).
About 12 people had agreed to be “on duty" during the summer to try to protect the waterways from rubbish pollution, he said. The county had sent 300 letters to riverside residents in September, inviting them to act as honorary rangers to deter property-owners from depositing rubbish in rivers. Offenders would be reported to the Christchurch Drainage Board. Mr Reid said that the volunteers would be recommended to the next meeting of the council. He hoped that more would come forward.
