N.I. rail tunnel to open soon
PA Wellington The new Porootarao railway tunnel between Te Kuiti and Taumarunui will be opened by the Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan) on November 10. The 1.3 km tunnel, built by the Ministry of Works and Development, replaces a nearby tunnel which was completed in IS9O. Tire old tunnel was one of the worst bottlenecks on the North Island Main Trunk because of its restrictive clearances and the poor condition of its lining. The new Sl6 million tunnel would provide improved clearances for modem rolling stock and avoid the need for speed restrictions through this busy section of the Main Trunk, Mr McLachlan said.
