Policy sought on environment
The Labour Party’s spokesman on the environment Mr M. K. Moore, has called for an environment policy for New Zealand. Government environmental agencies had to be restructured and reorganised to achieve policy objectives, he said. The Minister for the Environment should not also be the Minister of Lands and Forests as was now the case. Mr Moore was critical of the “inherent conflict”
within those departments. An example was the conflict in the Forest Service between commercial and conservation interests. The two interests had to be divorced because they had different objects and their success . was measured by different achievements. “In the coming Cabinet reshuffle, the Government must ensure it does not place environment alongside a portfolio that is incompatible,” said Mr Moore.
