Talks on coal ships issue
Three Cabinet ministers and officials of the Seamen’s Union have agreed to meet in Wellington on October 28 to seek a solution to the dispute which resulted in a delay in loading Buller coal into the Bengal Career at Lyttelton last week.
The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch), the Minister-of Transport (Mr McLachlan), and the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger) will, attend the meeting. Members of the Seamen’s Union picketed the Bengal Career on her arrival at Lyttelton last Friday and the ship remained idle until just after noon on Sunday, when the pickets were withdrawn after talks between union officials and Mr Birch. The union wants Buller coking coal ■ destined for Japan to be carried in vessels manned by New Zealand seamen.
The loading of the Bengal Career has proceeded quickly since the pickets were withdrawn ' and the ship, bearing the second shipment of New Zealand coal for Japanese steel-making industries, is expected to sail this afternoon.
The first coal vessel, the Sunda Career, left Lyttelton in July with about 35,000 tonnes of coal. The Bengal Career is expected to carry about 34,000 tonnes of coal.
