Number, cost of fines increasing
PA Wellington The average fine imposed in New Zealand courts increased from $39 in 1978 to $5B last year, according to the Justice Department’s annual report tabled in Parliament: Although fines collected by the department were up by more than $4 _ million, almost $6 million worth of fines was still outstanding at the end of March this year. This, the report says, could be partly attributed to increased maximum penalties available for drinking-driving offences, careless driving, and offences under the Road User Charges Act, 1977. Over the last five years the number of fines imposed has increased by 19 per cent. At the same time the amount imposed has gone up by 77 per cent.
