$1M to Pacific line
NZPA Canberra The Australian Government has announced a $1 million grant to the Pacific Forum line' to meet an urgent need for cash. The Minister of Foreign • Affairs (Mr Andrew. Pea- J cock) said Australia had expressed strong reservations about the viability of the line at the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government regional ’ meeting ,in Delhi. Australia' had also- made known that it considered
the line brought “limited benefits” to the region. Australia accepted the 'consensus of supporting the line at the mini Pacific Forum held at the regional meeting, but with the proviso that the support came from bilateral aid allocations' to the Pacific region. - The $1 million grant is an advance on an estimated. $4.5 million (SNZSSS million) bilateral aid. allo'cation to Papua 'New Guinea-and the South Pacific island countries.
