Hunt takes ski lead
Geoff Hunt (Queenstown) took the early lead in a series of five “Boogie in the Bumps” competitions at Mount Hutt With a narrow win in the initial contest. Hunt, the national freestyle champion, is very familiar' with the forrfiat of head-to-head racing down a challenging mogul fun. But he was very hardpressed in the final .by the New Zealand, • men’s ski-ing coach, Scott CAllaway (Mount Hutt). The contests are decided on both speed and technique and the judges had to order a re-run in. the final because the competitors were so evenly matched. < ’Similarly, in the scmiifinals a re-run had been required between ,-. Callaway and another freestyle expert, Hamish Cochran (Christchurch). It’.was a tough .day for .Callaway. <2.. '/ i ’One 6f the competitors, Tn* cidentaily, ws the former national skl-lhg Champion aild 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympic representative, Hoss Ewington, who finished seventh.
Results were:— Open coraipetltion.— Hunt 1, Callaway 2, Cochran 3, Kyle Slicker (U.S.A.) 4, Tony Simpson (Queenstown) 5, Gary Rav4nscroft (Australia), 6, Ewington 7, Joe Satherley (Mount Hutt)-8. Women’s competition.— Cherie Reimer (Christchurch) 1, Stephanie Brown (Christchurch) 2, Jenny Butler (U.S.A.) 3. The remaining “Boogie in.the Bumps” contests will be held ; at Hutt oyer the next four weekends.
