Social issues
Sir, — Mr Colson’s warnings about the United States Presidential campaign are timely — that it, reflects a general loss of faith in all systems, a lack of leadership, and frustration and anger on the part of the people, who are divided into the materialistic, and caring. The political result is an increase in the number of voters - seeking a third party to cope with what they see as the real problems of today’s society. .Politicians .may be adept at controversy
over economic and political matters but they shy away from social and ethical issues, which are becoming urgent. One gets the impression that there is a conspiracy of silence among world leaders to conceal from their peoples the real state of affairs, caused by over-population, over-devel-opment, shortages, pollution, etc. Or perhaps they lack the courage? — Yours,-etc., V. F. WILKINSON. September 1, 1980.
