Child care centres

Sir, —Margaret Farquhar is mistaken when she claims that Government Departments set high standards for A grade centres. Their standards are minimum for the physical care of pre-school-ers. Nothing is demanded for the emotional and educational standards which are so important. Parents must judge whether a centre is providing this. We live in a democratic society where parents choose what is best for their child; therefore it is obvious that those who pay $35 to $4O feel they are receiving value. The Child Care Association is trying to improve the standard of child care for children and staff, this is made more difficult by people doing it on the cheap. When will New Zealand society realise that all our children deserve . the best. Playcentres and kindergartens receive subsidies, so

surely, children in child care centres should have an equal share of taxes from Government or local authorities. — Yours, etc., S. WALKER. August 21, 1980.
