Catholic schools integration

Sir, — The appointment, of a representative of Wellington’s Catholic schools to the Wellington Education Board, by the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, is unprecedented and disturbing. If Catholic schools want 100 per cent funding by the taxpayer, they must accept the same conditions and controls as State schools. This is not the case in the agreement and they have certain discriminatory rights, such as accepting Catholic children first, in their schools and now as an influence on our Education boards, no doubt, causing sectional interests to become involved. What if Anglican, Presbyterian and other private schools decide to integrate? Will they have representation too? The administration of education' could develop into sectional interests, obtaining unfair advan-

tages over State schools as the Catholics have done, in their deal. The Minister and the Government are wrong to permit this situation and it can only be called political patronage. Educational groups should demand this representative’s removal; — Yours, etc., C. G. MARSHALL. August 13, 1980.
