Nelson Lakes no prospect
Nelson reporter,
Applications by two men for prospecting licenses to cover parts of Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa, in the Nelson Lakes National Park, received a very unsympathetic hearing from the park board at its meeting in Nelson. The board endorsed the recommendation of its scientific committee, that it did not favour the granting of the, licences. The application came from Messrs J. Roysmith and Atkinson at the June-meeting. They sought licences to cover an area <lOO metres wide bounded by the high-water mark and embracing the total shorelines of Lakes Rbtoroa and Rotoiti. The prospecting would be done by suction dredging.. Dr R; H. Thornton, chairman of the scientific committee, said that the committee could in "no way’’ recommend the issuing of these liceiices. The prospecting would cause ecological damage and result in a burst of nutrients into the lakes, he said.- - r ' The committee’s recommendation was ’ carried unanimously. '
