Exporters of wood worried

PA Nelson The Mount St Helens eruption in the United States could destroy some of Nelson’s log and wood chip export hopes. By felling and killing high quality trees over hundreds of square kilometres in Washington state, the volcano has flooded the world timber market and worried Nel® son timber exporters. "It could have quite an impact — we cannot nm away from that fact, Mr B. Wall, managing director of H. Baigent and Sons, Ltd, said. Baigent exports about 100,000 cubic : metres of timber annually in 10 shiploads to Japan. “I fear there will be a bigger problem with wood chips as a lot of material was shattered by the eruption,” Mr Wall said. "It is easier to process chips than- logs. There will certainly be more competition in the marketplace.”
