Railways loss
Sir, — The latest disclosed loss of the Railways Department in the vicinity of $9O million is certainly a cause for alarm but not so much a cause for alarm as are the pathetic attempts of the department’s general manager, Mr Trevor Hayward, to convince the public that his department is not really a pro-fit-making organisation but is now a. branch of the Social Welfare Department. As a general manager of a large-organisation Mr Hayward should acknowledge that his department is grossly inefficient and that he intends doing something about it, like pruning excessive overheads. Even in maintaining some uneconomic services, the total costs incurred are far too high. — Yours, etc,, MARK PETERS, Blenheim. . ’ August 9, 1980.
