Energy plans
Sir, — We now have threats from Mr, Birch, the Minister of Energy, to the effect that the Government is prepared to pass special legislation to prevent those opposed to major energy projects from using the new National Development Act to obstruct planned development. In democratic countries the planned projects are made public to allow for a broad consensus: before deciding to spend the taxpayers’ money on expensive projects. Mr Birch is determined to use . the money he is extracting from electricity users to build an enormous power station to sell cheap power to overseasinterests.. Surely one such aluminium smelter, is already; using too much cheap power leaving. South Islanders short. Hats off to Ashburton for deciding to generate its own power. Dunedin has a large new station, in operation and even the West - Coast opened a newt one recently. Yet our prop; osed one in North Canterbu-. ry has been shelved for the sake of money for initial preparatory work. — Yours, etc., . . . l-F
