Railways loss

Sir, —• The recent statement that tire Government has lost $9O million on an uneconomic railway system should- be put in its right perspective — namely that this amount of taxpayers’ money has been lost on our Government controlled railways through the inefficiency and lack of foresight by the controlling body. With every form of. public transport taxed to the limit the time is now ripe for a passenger blitz on New Zealand Railways by introducing a cut price fare sicheme attractive enough to entice all and sundry 7 to go by rail. Furthermore the Lyttelton-Wel-lington ferry should be restarted in order to boost rail travel from all parts of the country, thus renewing the once established links between the two islands. — Yours, etc.,

L. WESTNEY. August 6, 1980.
