Pope’s visit to Brazil

Sir, — Having been in a position to study at first hand the living conditions of the “people” in Latin America, I followed the visit of the Pope to Brazil. His reported attacks upon the authorities for the conditions under which the masses were forced to live would indicate that he was probably aware of the collusion between the authorities and

foreign industrialists. Certain multi-nationalists entered into an agreement with the Government to make use of the cheap hydro-power in Sao Paulo state, providing that the price of power was cheap and that they could be assured of no industrial unrest. The result is that the tradesmen, from Volkswagen and similar industries, are not paid enough to sustain their families. With this knowledge I am left wondering why our unions have selected Chile to impose an embargo upon. In Brazil trade unions are banned and dissenters are shot. — Yours, etc., JOHN J. FORSTER.
