The old public library

Sir, — Proposals’ to demolish the old public library have a familiar ring. Precisely the same reasoning, i.e. the use of the proceeds of jale elsewhere, were the justification for the original proposals to demolish a large part of the old university buildings. If these proposals had been 'carried there would be no Arts Centre. The same dedication and skill could convert the old library and librarian’s house into a vital multi-pur-pose building, even including some revenue-producing residential apartments. At least this would be reverting, in part, to one of the recommendations of Professor Colin Buchanan’s planning report to? the City Council of 1966, and subsequent district schemes. The work of the colonial architect, W. B. Armson, deserves the same veneration as that given to the work of B. W. Mountfort, and should not be levelled. Recent activity to save the old Post Office and the Normal School must indicate to. city councillors that the public ■ will no longer tolerate civic vandalism. — Yours, etc., D. E. DONNITHORNE. July 16, 1980.
