Lyttelton ferry

Sir, — The fact that the Treasury is ■ considering a technical and financial case study in connection with a Railways request to call tenders for the construction of an 8000-tonne ship for the Picton run is another indication of the Government’s determination to . persist in making Picton the focal point for passenger trade by sea from Wellington. Disillusioned citizens in Canterbury, Otago and Southland,, observing these plans for a new $40,000,000 flagship, and the triumph of the Picton lobby ,in this connection, surely will be demanding something more than vague promises from their National M.P.s on the reopening of the logical legitimate route by Lyttelton.. The elderly are now permanently locked in the South Island because of their inability to pay the steep air fares, and their reluctance to face the long rail haul from Christchurch to Picton. Fifty years ago sea communication between the two islands was 100 per cent better than it is today.! — Yours, etc., I. MACKAY. Lower Hutt. •, , ' July 12, 1980.'
