Essex Hospital closing
Sir, — Mr Grigg in "The Press” on July 7 said, “I don’t think we will have- to put mothers out early, but it is something to be considered provided there is adequate domiciliary help.” Already the closing of Essex is affecting women in the Christchurch Women’s Hospital. Women report “constant overtones of getting patients through as quickly as possible” and “I am totally exhausted after my stay in Christchurch Women’s Hospital with such an atmosphere.” In all three maternity wards during the last few days there was an average of three extra beds on the balconies which have neither hand basins nor cur-
tains for privacy. We are not yet in September or October, the busiest time of the year. What are women to understand by “Early release?” What do Mr Grigg and Dr Fairgray mean by “adequate maternity services?” When will the board “work on domiciliary help”? —Yours, etc., SYLVIA PEARSON. July 11, 1980.
