Cyclist retains lead

NZPA-Reuter Pra-Loup, France Joseph de Schoenmaecher, of Belgium, won yesterday’s sixteenth stage of the Tour de France, a tough 207 km climb into the French alps marked by falls in the final sprint to the finish. Joop Zoetemelk, of the Netherlands, held on to his over-all lead in spite of a nasty fall 100 metres from the finish.

Zoetemelk went down on his left shoulder when another rider, staggering up the final sharp climp at 1600 metres, cut suddenly in front of him.

He climbed back quickly on to his cycle and continued the harsh push to the top with blood dripping from his arm. He said after the stage that the injury looked worse than it was and he did not feel it would hamper him in today’s stage.
