Junior Boks trounce Barbarians side
NZPA Pretoria A star-studded South .African Barbarians side stuffed with international players was handed a six-try. 43-14. beating by the first multi-racial Junior Springbok side in Pretoria on Saturday. In a match played as a curtainraiser to the final test between the touring Lions and the Springboks, 68.000 fans were treated to a feast of running rugby. The Junior Springboks, Including a former Australian eap. .Mark loane. who was outstanding at No. 8. led. 16-10. at halftime and eventually won by six tries, five conversions and three penalties to three tries and one conversion.
The heroes of the Junior Springboks, who included two Coloured (mixed race: players for the first time, were Gawle Visagie. the white scrum-half, and Errol Tobias, the Coloured flvhalf.
Visagle slotted five conversions and three penalties and bad a hand in two of the tries. Tobias had his backline running like a well-oiled machine and also scored a superb solo trv in the second half. The Barbarians, who had seven! Lions not involved in the test
in their side, as well as the Argentinian fly-half wizard, Hugo Porta, and the French flanker, Jean-Pierre Rives, contributed to the entertaining game. Two Lions, John Beattie and Jim Renwick, both of Scotland, and Peter Morgan, of Wales, scored their tries, with Porta kicking one conversion. Other scorers for the Junior Springboks were the centre. Danie Gerber, who got two I tries, the fuil-back, Colin Beck, 1 a wing. Darius Botha, and a lock. Hennie. Becker, each grabbed one. Teams:—
