Snow still on passes

Greymouth reporter

Chains were essential for a time yesterday for all vehicles on passes leading in and out of the West Coast, because of snow.

However, a thaw and work >y graders led to the Ministry of Works advising motorists to carry chains if travelling on the Arthur’s Pass-Otira section of State Highway 73 and on the Lewis Pass.

i Chains were still essential late yesterday on the Haast Pass. Snow fell between Haast township and the pass, and between Jacobs River and Lake Moeraki. The road was and grit spread, but the danger was from ice patches. Snow was lying at Blackball yesterday morning and it was snowing in the Lake Lyndon area yesterday afternoon.

Snow had also fallen on the Hope Saddle and at Tophouse on the road to Blenheim.
