Bad start for England

NZPA-Reuter Manchester The decision of the West Indian captain. Clive Lloyd, to put England in to bat after winning the toss was quickly rewarded on the opening morning of the third cricket test at Old Trafiiord early this morning (N.Z. time). The West Indies broke through in the fifth over when Andy Roberts dismissed the opener, Granam Gooch, who had scored a century in the previous test. Roberts’s direction had been astray initially but he suddenly produced a fine delivery which cut back and bowled Gooch leg before for two. England was

then one for three. Geoff Boycott took 40 minutes to score his first run but Brian Rose, making his home test debut, settled in capably against the new-ball attack of Roberts and Michael Holding. Rose dealt effectively with the short pitched deliveries and got his score moving with some swift running betweent he wickets. However, the West Indies struck another Important blow when Roberts produced a r/.ort bal] which Boycott, on five, could not keep down and it flew off the top edge to Joel Garner in the gully to make England 18 for two.
