Average wage: many fall short
PA Wellington About 60 per cent of New Zealand’s wage and salary earners are paid less than the average wage of $151.75 a week, according to the Minister of Statistics (Mr Templeton). A Parliamentary question from the Opposition had sought the proportion of wage-earners being paid less than the average wage. Mr Templeton said that the Department of Statistics could not supply a precise answer, but it had estimated the proportion would be between 57 per cent and 61 per cent.
